The 2022 edition of the Festival kicks off on Friday, November 25th at 7:00pm with a double-dose of Canadian cinema from two directors making their feature debuts. The night begins with ‘Rosie,’ a comedy/drama directed by Gail Maurice, an expansion on her 2018 short film of the same name, followed by ‘SLASH/BACK’ the Inuit science fiction film, directed by Nyla Innuksuk, that follows a group of Inuit teenage girls as they battle and kick some alien-butt.
Saturday starts with ‘Cow,’ the critically-acclaimed documentary chronicling the daily life of a dairy cow in an attempt to move humans closer to them, meanwhile, the afternoon focuses on female stories. The first-afternoon film, ‘Girl Picture,’ is a Finnish coming-of-age film from director Alli Haapasalo that won an Audience Award at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Then, ‘Happening’ is a riveting drama from director Audrey Diwan, who won the Golden Lion for this film at the Venice Film Festival based on a novel by Nobel Prize in Literature award-winning author, Annie Ernaux. The day wraps up with ‘Triangle of Sadness,’ the award-winning comedy from director Ruben Östlund, and winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival.
Sunday begins with our Shorts Program, curated by Jung-Ah Kim, a South Korean filmmaker/researcher/curator currently based in Kingston, Ontario. Her doctoral research is interested in experimenting with material conditions of both digital and handcrafted media to make images move. Sunday afternoon offers more homegrown Canadian cinema with ‘Falcon Lake,’ part summertime coming-of-age story and part eerie gothic. This French-Canadian drama is the feature directorial debut of Canadian actor, Charlotte Le Bon.
The North Bay Film Festival team is also very excited to present the visually stunning documentary ‘Moonage Daydream’ from Brett Morgen, featuring never-before-seen footage and performances that take audiences on a mesmerizing exploration into David Bowie’s creative, spiritual, and musical journey.
This year’s festival will come to a close with ‘Decision to Leave,’ the South Korean romantic/mystery/thriller from award-winning director Park Chan-wook, focusing on a detective who falls for a mysterious widow after she becomes the prime suspect in his latest murder investigation. ‘Decision to Leave’ is the official South Korean entry for the Best International Film at the 95th Academy Awards.
