About the Event
Ice Follies (Feb 10-24, 2023) is a biennial festival of contemporary and community-engaged art presented by an ad-hoc collective on frozen Lake Nipissing. Audiences are invited to engage with works situated offshore from the North Bay waterfront and along the shores of Nipissing First Nation. The Ice Follies Committee includes representation from the three artist-run centres in the Nipissing area spanning contemporary visual arts, Indigenous arts, performance, media arts, and community-engaged artistic practices.
Job Overview
A technically focused role responsible for installing and managing much of the technical (AV, electrical and power supply) infrastructure for Ice Follies, as well as assisting artists and curators with the physical aspects of installing their projects as needed. Ideally, the candidate would have experience with AV and lighting. Additionally, the ideal candidate should have:
Key skills and capabilities
- Experience with installation and maintenance of electrical systems and power supply for outdoor events.
- Proficiency with installing AV, Sound, and electrical equipment.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and planning skills.
- Ability to identify challenges and work through problem-solving solutions in a high-pressure environment.
- A team player and eager collaborator.
- Experience with outdoor events and/or productions mounted during winter months.
- Own appropriate winter gear rated to -30C as most of this position’s work takes place outdoors.
Job role, tasks and responsibilities
- Help plan the power infrastructure for the event and prioritize having power up and running as soon as possible for all projects that require it.
- Plan and manage the distribution and balance of power supply across the different activities and times of the event.
- Locate or book all the equipment required to achieve the technical infrastructure while ensuring that the technical elements of the budget are kept within agreed-upon limits.
- Maintain accurate records of any technical budget expenditures. Ensure all technical expenditures is signed off and approved by the delegated authority.
- Work with the delegated authority to oversee, negotiate and manage any regulatory requirements with local authorities and associate providers, including the use of public space.
- Develop technical schedules for installation and delegate tasks to volunteers assigned to help in this department.
- Work collaboratively with artists and contractors in order to realize their work onsite, within the time constraints.
- Weatherproof and make safe all power and electrical devices. Maintain the systems throughout the event.
- Ensure that all cabling is installed efficiently for maximum usability, durability, safety, and aesthetics: with care towards the look of the event and the high impact of weather and public interaction.
- Work with the delegated authority to ensure the festival meets all health and safety requirements and operates in a risk-free environment.
- Provide the Ice Follies Collective team with regular briefings on developments and progress in all areas of responsibility and keep them fully informed of any significant issues which may affect the festival’s activities.
- Throughout the Festival (during set-up and presentation) oversee the provision of power.
- Work with the delegated authority to ensure the smooth pack-out of the Festival, the return of hired equipment/materials, and the return of the site to its prior condition.
- Respond to correspondence such as emails, phone calls, or requests for in-person meetings, and liaise with artists and presenting organizations as required.
- General cleaning duties of the workplace and project space(s).
- Any other tasks that the delegated authorities may require from time to time.
- Attend meetings leading up to the Festival to participate in preparation for the event as required.
- Provide the Ice Follies Collective team, on completion of the 2023 Festival, with a report covering all areas of responsibility.
