Organization: Near North Mobile Media Lab
Location: North Bay (Digital Creator space in the Capitol Centre, North Bay, ON.)
Residency Start Date: 07-01-2024
Residency End Date: 31-03-2024

This Stipend is based on the assumption that the Artist will spend 35 hrs/wk at this Residency. The Artist will be put on salary and be paid $30/hr for the 12 week period of the Residency.

About Us:

The Near North Mobile Media Lab functions as a crucial hub for media artists, students, and filmmakers in Northern Ontario, providing them with the essential tools they need to produce, exhibit, and enjoy various forms of contemporary media arts. This comprehensive support includes equipment rentals at affordable rates, workshops, screenings, and community-building events. N2M2L also operates Digital Creator North Bay, a vibrant drop-in learning space dedicated to empowering youth aged 11-19 with digital media skills.

Residency Overview:

During this transformative 12-week Residency within our Digital Creator studio you’ll immerse yourself in an exploration of digital media art resulting in technical know-how and artistic growth. You’ll have access to all of our equipment including: Canon DSLR cameras with lighting kit and accessories; Apple Ipads and Apple pencils with drawing and animation apps like Procreate and Stop Motion Studio; Meta Quest virtual reality headsets with Tiltbrush and Gravity Sketch; DJ mixing table, voice and audio recording equipment; iMac and Macbooks with Adobe Creative Cloud programs; a brand new FDM 3D printer, and more.

The artist will be mentored for an average of 6 hours per week by the Near North Mobile Media Lab’s Technical Coordinator and the Digital Creator Facilitator, with each mentor having skill sets in different areas. In addition, there is a budget for 12-15 hours of external mentorship.

The Artist will also gain experience through offering a limited number of public sessions with our community members. Our expectation is that the Artist will deliver one workshop every month, as well as offer 2 or more hours each week of open studio sessions for youth or adults who are interested in the Artist’s area of expertise. They will finish the Residency by offering a public Artist Talk. By the end of their time with Digital Creator, the artist will be well-equipped for future success in the sector, having built up their media art and presentation skills as well as expanded their areas of creative expression.

Digital Creator Space:

The Digital Creator space is located in the lower level of the historic Capitol Centre in downtown North Bay. It is available for the Artist in Residence to use for at least 35 hours per week, between the hours of 7AM and 11PM.
