What is the LumanityNORTH Film Incubator?

The LumanityNORTH Film Incubator is a short film lab for Northern Ontario filmmakers with training in the various stages of filmmaking. Three teams will be selected for a weekend-long boot camp, to receive training and mentorship from industry professionals, further developing their projects and for a chance at the production award. The winning project will receive in-kind services and a $10,000 grant to complete their short film, as well as a guaranteed premiere slot at the Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival and a potential broadcast by Bell Media bravoFACT. How Much Does It Cost?

There is a $40 application fee per team.

*Each selected team must supply their own transportation during the program. The weekend training session will occur in North Bay and the post-production finishing facility is in Parry Sound at OutPost Media. Food and lodging will be supplied during required sessions.

Which Projects are Eligible:

  • Projects will be selected based on their creative and commercial merits.
  • Scripts must be no longer than six pages (with running time of 7:30 minutes)
  • Projects must be narrative (animated, experimental and documentary films are not eligible).
  • Projects can be in any genre provided it meets standard broadcast requirements.
  • Theme and subject matter are open. LNFI will not accept any project that contains excessive violence, sexual violence or sexual exploitation.


What Does LumanityNORTH Film Incubator Offer:

LumanityNORTH Film Incubator is an educational and training program for Northern Ontario producer/writer/director teams looking to make a calling card short film to advance their careers. It provides filmmakers with professional support and training in the various stages of filmmaking while they develop and produce a short film. Three teams will be selected for a weekend boot camp to receive mentoring from industry professionals and a chance to compete for the production award.


During the Bootcamp you will receive:

  • A chance to work with an experienced story editor to polish your script;
  • Customized training delivered by industry experts in writing, directing, producing, managing production and post-production etc;
  • Food and lodging during the BootCamp;
  • Mentorship from industry professionals.

Grant Award Recipients Will Receive:

  • A $10,000 production grant to be used to make your film;
  • In-kind services towards making your film which include camera and lighting equipment, post-production facilities, insurance and legal consultation;
  • Food and lodging during the post-production finishing

* Specific dates for the training sessions are subject to change but, tentatively, the boot camp will be from May 3-4, 2014.


In Order to be Eligible Applicants Must:

  • Submit new projects not yet in production
  • All applicants must be a Northern Ontario resident as defined by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation
  • Not be currently enrolled in any full-time school or university program unless they are currently completing their final school year.
  • All but two key talent and one key crew member must be Northern Ontario residents
  • Have a total of no less then 80% of final crew must be Northern Ontario residents
  • Have a project that is considered as Canadian Content according to the guidelines set out by the CRTC. For more information, please visit www.ctrc.gc.ca to ensure your project qualifies
  • Confirm that the script meets the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and Canadian Broadcast Standards Council Code of Ethics. [Nudity, graphic violence and profane language are prohibited.]
  • Own the rights to the story and script. This includes ownership of, or option on, all underlying rights (if any);
  • Maintain creative and financial control over the project. LNFI reserves the right to disqualify any team that does not fully own the rights in and to the project (except for such approvals as are customary in the industry from distributors, broadcasters, financiers, investors, etc.);
  • Have determined ownership and decision-making control between themselves and must identify which team member/s own the project;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant over the age of 18;
  • Not be a participant in any other training program that would conflict with your ability to commit to the LumanityNORTH Film Incubator;
